The Blizzard of '09 - H says that this can hardly be called a blizzard because he's seen much worse, not to mention that he had to walk uphill both ways barefoot in it each day. But barring the fact that he apparently was born during some politically agendized Victorian novel, we survived the blizzard. Quite well, actually. For the first time in at least a year, I watched the local news the Thursday night before it began so I actually went to the store Friday and stocked up. Before watching the news, I was planning on waiting 'til Saturday. We got about 2 feet just on Saturday and then it stopped. It was beautiful - because I had a stocked fridge. The only thing I didn't get was a snow shovel. I just didn't think of it. Luckily we have an awesome neighbor who let us borrow his. It took us forever just to dig out the driveway on Monday. The next day our neighbor proved even more awesome and used his snow blower on our sidewalks and widened the driveway for us. The snowplow finally hit our street around 9:00 pm on Monday. Thankfully, with church, school, and work cancelled we had no where to go. We had fun going out and playing in it, but I honestly think we spent more time suiting up and then stripping down (outers only, this is a family blog) than we spent in the snow. It was too deep for M so she couldn't really get past the front door. Even with W making a path, I'd have to go back for her because she would get stuck and couldn't move.
We attempted angels, but it was more of just lying down in the snow and giggling because it was so deep.L wanted to stay out the longest. There wasn't much you could do with it, though, other than tramp around or lie down in it. She stayed out by herself at one point doing just that while I stayed overprotectively by the front door watching. I'm not sure who could've stolen her - Frosty?
Here's W's version of a new sport - snow swimming.
He kept getting himself so covered in it that he couldn't see. He would then wipe his glasses with his wet mittens, which worked really well. At which point he would take his hat off, declare himself cold and go back in.
My only regret - the snow was so powdery that we couldn't build a snowman. We couldn't even make snowballs, but it didn't stop the kids from throwing snow.
To wonderful results.
We went out every day to try again, but it wouldn't work. Finally we just stuck a carrot and some bark on one of the bushes in front of our house. It looked like a snowman who had melted. (picture coming soon ;)
Here's our deck the morning after. I set a bowl out on the deck during the snow. It filled and we made snow cream with it. The girls loved it, the boys, not so much.
Here's the tree that fell down in our back yard. It's actually our neighbor's (you know, the awesome one) and he was hoping that it would spring back up once the snow melted. It didn't.
All in all, it was a pretty good blizzard.
